JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is surpassed by THE FIRST SLAM DUNK to rank as the tenth highest-grossing anime movie in Japan.

Still 5th highest-grossing anime film worldwide

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, which last weekend rose to fifth position on the global list owing to strong box office receipts from all across Asia, has now officially surpassed JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 and reached the top 10 highest-grossing list in Japan thanks to a strong performance over the Golden Week holidays.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK has earned 13.96 billion yen (US$106.09 million) in Japan as of May 7 thanks to the more than 9.66 million tickets that have been sold since the movie's December debut. It has surpassed JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 in Japan, where the official box office calendar runs from December to November. It is also the 10th-highest-grossing anime movie and the 16th-highest-grossing movie overall. In Japan, Weathering With You is listed above Slam Dunk on both rankings.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK is now the fifth-highest-grossing anime movie of all time globally, overtaking Suzume, which is also now playing in theaters. The movie has already made US$91.92 million in China, its second-largest market outside of Japan, and US$36.46 million in South Korea. The movie has so far made US$264.82 million worldwide, with US$30.35 million coming from seven more Asian countries.

From 1993 through 1996, Slam Dunk TV's original anime series aired, and four follow-up anime movies were produced. The TV anime is currently available on Crunchyroll as an on-demand replay.

THE FIRST SLAM DUNK premiered in Japan on December 3, 2022, in conventional and IMAX cinemas, and on December 10, it was added to Dolby Cinema screens. This summer, Anime Limited and Toei Animation Europe will release the movie in the UK, Ireland, and Malta, while GKIDS will release it simultaneously in North America. Here is how GKIDS describes the movie:
Ryota Miyagi, the point guard for Shohoku, is known for his "speedster" style of play. He outdistances his opponents while maintaining his cool. Ryota was reared and born on Okinawa, and his older brother was three years older. Ryota developed a basketball addiction, following in the footsteps of his elder brother, who was a well-known local player from a young age.
